What is atopic dermatitis?

The correct term is “atopic dermatitis” or “atopic eczema” and this skin disease is colloquially known as “neurodermatitis”.
For the sake of simplicity, I will stick to “neurodermatitis” in my article.
In atopic dermatitis, the skin lacks a protein that is responsible for closing the skin barrier so that oil and moisture are not lost.
The lack of this protective barrier in turn leads to the skin drying out and becoming more easily irritated.
This makes the affected person’s skin susceptible to inflammation.

How common is atopic dermatitis?

Worldwide: Unfortunately, atopic dermatitis is becoming increasingly common and it is estimated that around 15-20% of children worldwide suffer from it.
In the adult group, the figure is 2-10%. Austria: According to the Medical University of Vienna, up to 15% of children and 5% of adults in Austria are affected (as of 29.09.2023).
The course changes with age.
In 60 to 70 percent of affected children, the symptoms improve or disappear by the age of 15.
Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for an atopic disease such as neurodermatitis, but it is possible to improve the severity of the symptoms through targeted care and a healthy lifestyle.
For these reasons, certain irritants (which can vary from person to person) and triggers such as stress should be avoided as much as possible.

Why develop “Skin consolation”?

My brother had atopic dermatitis, so I am very familiar with the suffering.
It is a great burden for sufferers and their families and friends.
As the skin disease unfortunately cannot be cured, it is a matter close to my heart to bring some relief to these people.
The need to help people is also the reason why I developed “Hauttrost”.
