The art of nourishing natural soaps: an insight into my world
Today I would like to shed some light on a topic that is particularly close to my heart:
The caring effect of natural soaps.
What actually is a soap?
Let’s start with the basics: Natural soaps are an interaction of oils/fats, butters and lye (sodium or potassium hydroxide and water).
The key to their production is the saponification process, which is achieved through the right temperature and the combination of lipids and lye.
At SeifenLust® I use the so-called cold stirring process (colloquially known as the “cold saponification process”).
This method involves working exclusively at temperatures of 35-50°C and therefore the natural glycerine contained in the fat is retained.
Soaps produced using the cold boiling process are therefore particularly kind to the skin.
Even if this is questioned by some academics, I can say from years of experience and through my own use of my products that the statement – “particularly skin-friendly and nourishing” – is true.
But how can it be that a product that is so rich in nourishing ingredients sometimes leaves the skin feeling unpleasantly dry? The subtle difference: lye base and its significance The answer lies in the detail – more precisely, in the soap’s formula and the lye base used (colloquially: “superfatting”).
The lye base determines how much of the valuable oils, fats and butter remain for skin care after the saponification process.
Surprisingly, many sources of relevant literature and the Internet state that a lye deficiency of 5 – 10 % is sufficient to produce a “nourishing” soap. I cannot agree with this statement in any way.
Different approaches to soap production
Conventional soaps: Most of the industrial “soaps” available on the market today are not soaps in the true sense of the word.
They are washing bars.
These are made from synthetically produced washing-active substances, known as surfactants.
These washing bars are generally soap-free and do not have the natural care properties of real soap. Manufactures: Many manufacturers often only use a lye content of 4 to 5 % in the production of real soaps, some aim for a maximum of 8 %.
In my opinion, this is not nearly enough to describe a soap as “nourishing”.
There are very few soap manufacturers who recognize the true value of higher superfatting and pay attention to a lye base of over 10% when making soap. SeifenLust®: I go one step further with my SeifenLust® products and therefore offer – depending on the soap – a lye base of 15 – 30%.
This gives the skin the care it deserves.
So the good news is:
Yes, it is possible to make nourishing natural soaps that not only cleanse the skin but also pamper it.
My philosophy: Tailor-made formulas for every skin type
In my cosmetics manufacture, I attach particular importance to ensuring that a high proportion of the oils, fats and butters are not saponified.
In this way, I ensure that my soaps not only cleanse, but also leave the skin feeling soft and nourished after washing.
At SeifenLust®, every product is a testament to my bespoke care.
I create each soap with a unique formula specifically designed to meet the diverse needs of the skin.
My aim is for everyone, regardless of their skin type, to find the perfect soap in my range.
This approach clearly sets SeifenLust® apart from many other soap makers and manufacturers.
While it is widespread in the industry to use a standardized basic recipe for cost reasons and only vary it with colors, fragrances or a “special” additive (dried flowers or herbs, clay or healing earth, etc.), I choose a different approach.
At SeifenLust® you will NOT find one-size-fits-all solutions!
Each soap is the result of a careful selection and combination of ingredients specially formulated to nourish, protect and pamper your skin.
Because your skin deserves nothing less than individual care that is tailored precisely to your needs.
SeifenLust® soaps: an oasis of care
My care soaps have an alkaline content of 15-30%, a conscious decision to achieve the best possible care effect.
My hand soap with 20% lye base turns every hand wash into a soothing ritual.
Even with my hair soapswhich are formulated with a 10% lye base, I ensure a good balance between cleansing and care.
Tips for special skin needs
For dry skin, I like to recommend my Old Viennese coconut soap with 30% lye base or the Savon-du-Soleil with 72% olive oil and 20% lye base.
For female skin, my Lavender Maid with argan oil (15% lye base) is a real treat. Of course, men’s skin should not be forgotten either – here I recommend my Knight Rosemary (15% lye base), enriched with the unique apricot kernel oil, which is specially tailored to the needs of demanding skin. I’m delighted if this insight into the world of nourishing natural soaps has inspired you.
I believe that true care comes from within.
Every SeifenLust® soap reflects the fact that I create them for you with a lot of love.
Experience nature on your skin!
See you soon and stay of course!
